The church housed the Dominican order from the 13th century onwards and is the first basilica where the architectural vocabulary of Italian Gothic was adopted. In the 15th century, commissioned by the Rucellai family, Leon Battista Alberti created the upper completion of the façade, an example of the Renaissance language. In addition to the interior frescoes in the family chapels of the Strozzi and Tornabuoni families, created by Filippino Lippi and Ghirlandaio's workshop, the astronomical instruments of Egnazio Danti, Cosimo I de' Medici's cosmographer: the armillary sphere, astronomical quadrant and sundials.
